As noted earlier, Piedra Vista has found an athletic director. Tom Shields, a Chicago guy, is in the process of moving from the Midwest to the Southwest. I'm hoping to talk with him Friday morning and put together a story for Saturday's paper. Good thing there's nothing big going on this week that could potentially monopolize my time.

Oh wait, that's right.

By the way, Manny Ramirez is now a Los(t) Angeles Dodger.

Jim Traina, the head golf pro at Kirtland's Riverview Golf Course, shot an opening-round 85 today at the U.S. Senior Open. Traina is 15 over on the par-72 Broadmoor Country Club in Colorado Springs, Colo.

A former Connie Mack World Series star made headlines this afternoon. Ken Griffey Jr., who played at Ricketts back in the day, was traded from the Cincinnati Reds to the Chicago White Sox. Here's the AP brief that came across this afternoon.

The Chicago White Sox acquired Griffey from his hometown Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, hoping the 38-year-old outfielder can help them hold onto their slim lead in the AL Central.
The Reds sent Griffey and cash to Chicago for reliever Nick Masset and Triple-A second baseman Danny Richar.
The deal was announced a half-hour before the 4 p.m. EDT deadline to make trades without waivers.

Well, the big day is almost here. Connie Mack clubs start arriving today, police escorts at the lead.

And just a note regarding the Connie Mack special section, which I mistakenly said would be in Thursday's paper. It isn't, but will be included Friday.

The big Connie Mack parade is Friday afternoon. I've never checked out the parade, but may have to do so tomorrow. Is there candy involved?

Aside from Connie Mack, Darren and I are working on a few stories for the weekend. Piedra Vista has hired an athletic director to replace Buster Mabrey, who left the school last winter. Also, FCAT is sending a pair of athletes to a big upcoming meet. Hopefully, both those stories will be in Friday's paper, along with a preview of the huge Midland-East Cobb game slated for 8 p.m. tomorrow.

Also, in case you haven't heard, the Boston Red Sox are working on a three-team trade that involves sending Manny Ramirez to the Florida Marlins, according to ESPN. Wouldn't that be a blockbuster?

Good day.

Darren just got off the phone with Midland coach Dave Evans. Incredibly, Redskins first baseman Eric Hosmer is on the roster despite being the third overall selection in the June MLB draft. The first baseman, who was the MVP of the 2007 World Series, is waiting until after this year's tournament to sign with the Kansas City Royals.

This guy's sitting on a few million dollars, but wanted to help the Redskins try and repeat as CMWS champs. That's dedication, right there.

The field is set for the Connie Mack World Series, which gets underway Friday at 5:15 p.m. at Ricketts Park.

Here's a list of the squads set to invade Farmington. You'll notice a couple familiar names, including the Midland Redskins, who know a thing or two about August baseball in the Four Corners:

I just talked with Rusty Evans, the coach for the Farmington Cardinals, who are gearing up to be the host team for the Connie Mack World Series. Apparently, the Cards will play their first-round game Saturday night rather than Friday. They hook up with the Houston Miracles on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Ricketts Park.

The Miracles won the South Plains Region, though it wasn't easy. Needing to win just one of two games Saturday against the Houston Raiders, they fell 8-0 before regrouping with a 7-6 win to secure their trip to Farmington.

Evans said the Cardinals picked up two flame-throwing righties, one from the Dallas Mustangs and another from the Dallas Tigers, for the week. The Tigers import, Matt Lackie, joined last year's host team, the Storm, for the World Series.

We're in transition mode, here, coming off the rodeo. The Series starts Friday and runs through Aug. 8. The incoming teams that we know of thus are: Cardinals, Miracles, Llaneros 21 (Puerto Rico), Florida Legends and Arizona Firebirds. We'll pass along updates, probably Monday, as we learn who the final five teams are.

Well, it's 3:30 a.m., and we're still attempting to send the paper. Little bit of a computer problem, which is awesome. Needless to say, I can't wait to come right back in Sunday morning and start writing about the Connie Mack World Series. Ya know, right after church and brunch.

I do have a National High School Finals Rodeo confession to make. On Friday, I went to McGee Park without a pen in my pocket. So I did the only natural thing I could think of. I registered to win a Dodge Ram simply so I could steal their pen. It was orange, black ink. Quite marvelous. Regardless, I owe the Dodge company a pen. Consider it done and done ... next year.

And just so you know, I didn't win the truck. Shocking. Thought I had that locked up.

With Corbin Carpenter still in serious condition, the good folks at McGee started collecting money tonight. Incredibly, in one night, they raised more than $12,000 in cash. One night. That's stunning to me. Corbin apparently was doing a bit better Saturday, though he still faces a lengthy rehab process in the weeks and months ahead. He was moving his hands, a very good sign. I had the chance to talk to a few contestants on the Louisiana team, and it's evident Corbin has a very solid support team. Again, we'll keep him in our thoughts and prayers.

Utah had a nice little week at the rodeo. The Utah squad won the boys, girls and overall team title. Who knew? It also produced the rodeo queen, who replaces last year's Utah rodeo queen. Darren, as you may know, is from Utah. He's far from a cowboy.

And now, after 74.5 hours thus far this week, I'm heading home. I'd post the results from tonight's short-go, but there already up on the Web site.

The morning performance, along with the cutting finals, are complete. Raley Radomske and Cody Hedlund nailed down national titles in girls and boys cutting, respectively. Radomske arrived at Memorial Coliseum roughly 10 minutes after her pole bending run, just in time to tally a 221. The Washington contestant is leading the All-Around Cowgirl standings by some 300 points going into tonight's short-go, and she's also making a bid to become the NHSRA student president.

She's busy.

Before we get to the results, I wanted to pass along a quick note. An account has been set up in Corbin Carpenter's name at the local Citizen's Bank branches, as well as out at McGee. Carpenter, of course, was injured during a Friday bull riding run. We'll try and track down the latest update regarding his condition and post it at some point today.

The account's name is Louisiana High School Rodeo Association for Corbin Carpenter, or some such version. Basically, if you visit any Citizen's Bank branch in San Juan County and drop Corbin's name, folks will know what you're talking about.

Well then.

Somehow, some way, there's but a single day left in the 2008 National High School Finals Rodeo. Where on God's green earth did this week go? It honestly feels like just yesterday that Darren and I were wondering how we'd cover this thing for seven hours, write three stories and lay out the section each day. We managed. Fists were thrown, but we managed.

I kid. We didn't throw fists, just coffee cups and balls of paper. And at 2 a.m., that's often quite humorous. So we laugh. We're delirious, as are the photographers, Lindsay and Lucas, who have spent an inordinate amount of time capturing the rodeo in amazing photographs. And our news folks have provided some great stories, as well.

Speaking of tireless work, I've been listening to Steve Bortstein and his crew much of the week. Granted, Steve currently sounds like he's been chain-smoking non-stop since 1998, but he's still putting out a terrific product. I've joked with him about the fact that he's likely set up a cot at McGee Park, what with broadcasting the rodeo countless hours over the past six days. He's the iron man of Four Corners radio. Get him some water ... or a shot. And he's written daily columns for our Rodeo Review, one of which featured Steve as a calf. Good times.

I spent the morning at McGee Park today for the 10th performance. It was hot, no surprise there. How do cowboys, or perhaps, why do cowboys, insist on wearing long sleeves, jeans, boots and hats in this weather?

Of course, there was the bad injury today, which I mentioned in an earlier post. Corbin Carpenter underwent surgery this evening, and reportedly could feel his legs being moved by nurses. Corbin drew a bad bull, and paid the price. Check Saturday's paper for an update on his condition, as well as comments from his mother. Needless to say, the entire Daily Times staff is thinking of and praying for Corbin and his family.

Other notable additions to Saturday's paper include a photo collection turned in by Miss Alabama, Natalie Thompson, who took a camera for a day and sent us her results. And there's a cool story about some dynamite sportsmanship this week. Something about shared horses. Hey, I just work here.

Saturday is the short-go, along with the cutting finals (9 a.m.). It should be a maddening day fraught with national champions. We have some good stuff planned for Sunday's paper, including blowout coverage of the finals. Then, it's time to rest Sunday. Oh wait, the Connie Mack World Series starts next Friday, and hundreds of words must be written for that event's special section. Thus, Sunday marks the beginning of more craziness.

All the excitement that accompanies the National High School Finals Rodeo was muted just a bit during the Friday morning performance at McGee Park when a harrowing injury occurred in bull riding. A lengthy delay ensued as the announcer asked fans to keep 17-year-old Corbin Carpenter of Louisiana in their thoughts and prayers. After roughly 20 minutes, Corbin was wheeled into an ambulance and carted from the arena to a heartfelt applause.

Corbin was unconscious for about five minutes, according to onlookers.

Other than that, we have no word yet on the severity of his injuries (and I didn't see it live and thus can't provide more details). Suffice to say, there's a lot of heavy hearts around McGee Park this afternoon, especially for those fans who witnessed the fall. We'll provide an update if and when one becomes available. Until then, we'll be pulling for the young man.

One notable time produced Friday morning came from Oklahoma's Riley Duvall, who posted a 3.476 in steer wrestling. That's the fastest mark of the week.

We got a history lesson prior to Thursday night's NHSFR performance at McGee Park. The announcer informed fans that the first NHSFR, held in 1949, attracted 188 contestants from seven states. Times are a changin'.

Really nice pre-rodeo ceremony. There's still nothing that gets my blood flowing like the Stars and Stripes being toted around on a horse while the National Anthem is played. Just before, a flag from each of the 40 competing states, as well as Canada and Australia, made its way to the arena floor. And they retired the original U.S. flag, which I'm pretty sure had just 49 stars in 1949. I could be wrong. Heck, I'm pretty sure I'm wrong. How many states were there in 1949? Eight, 10? Who knows.

Thursday night marked the halfway point of the second go, and the pressure's mounting on cowboys and cowgirls still trying to sneak into Saturday night's finals. Three more shows left, two Friday and one Saturday morning.

It was an eventful morning out there at McGee Park, I can tell you that much. The medical personnel on site had their work cut out for them, as two athletes - a saddle bronc rider from Louisiana and a pole bender from Minnesota - had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance. With a sport as inherently dangerous as rodeo, we can all be thankful that these athletes are able to get top-notch care - and quickly, too.
