KC-Shiprock and Wingate-Bloomfield Extras

I covered the KC-SHS boys Friday and the Bloomfield girls today.

Not that the Bobcat Gymnasium crowd was scant, but it felt a bit more laid back and a little easier to find a parking space.

The game tipped off at 8:43 p.m. tonight, making deadline (11:30 p.m.) a terror to strive after. I've gotten fast at the shortcut keys on Mac, but my fingers feel like they're about to fall off right now.

I didn't get back to the office until 10:45 p.m. to start my game story.

Congratulations to the Broncos on sweeping the boys and girls games at The Chieftain Pit.

The girls will become a dominant No. 1 in the rankings and the boys launch themselves into the conversation for district favorite now behind Piedra Vista.

Some team stats from the Broncos and Cheiftains (KC is listed on the left of each):

Turnovers: K - 28, S - 19
2-point FG: 23-56, 13-41
3-point FG: 0-10, 3-27
R: 67, 35
FT: 15-29, 15-24
A: 14, 14
F: 24, 21

And from the Lady Bears and Lady Bobcats (Wingate listed on the left):

Turnovers: W - 21, B - 30
2-point FG: 16-40, 16-39
3-point FG: 3-17, 1-8
R: 25, 43
FT: 12-20, 23-36
A: 11, 12
F: 26, 18

Some of the Wingate fans got onto coach Paul Corley a bit in the second half (although I doubt he noticed) because his daughter Cheyanne Corley always seemed to get the ball and draw a foul.

She shot 13-of-16 from the free throw line in the half, parcing streaks of seven and six makes in a row with three misses.

I don't blame the coach for getting her the ball that much. Wingate was fouling, and she was making foul shots. I don't doubt she's the best, or one of the best, free throw shooters on the team, and she handled pressure well, making all six in the last minutes.

There are times when coaches give preferential treatment to their sons or daughters. Paul Corley obviously is proud of his daughter. But this wasn't one of those times.

Congrats to the Lady Bobcats for reaching nine wins, last year's total, despite the midseason suspension of some of their key players including Corley.

I also noticed a healthy display of Bloomfield gear in the gym lobby near the concession stand.

Phil Sategna has the longest tenure of any area athletic director (I'm almost certain about this), and I didn't get a close look, but it seemed like there was some good stuff there, maybe even some vintage stuff. Worth checking out if you're not working on deadline.

One final note: Shiprock coach Cliff Johns won't be allowed to coach the district games against Piedra Vista or Farmington. I'll have more in Monday morning's paper.

Stay true and keep pounding,
Christopher
