Explanation for Aztec's No-Foul Overtime

I've written enough about Piedra Vista's 47-45 overtime win over Aztec not to rehash the entire game.

The Lady Tigers fell behind by two with :39 left, missed a shot near 30 seconds and watched as PV dribbled the rest of the clock dry.

I asked coach Tom Shields for an explanation. Shields said he instructed his team to trap during the final minute and try to force a turnover, then foul in the final 10-15 seconds if it didn't work.

"At the end of the game, I'll take the heat on that one. I was trying to communicate that we were gonna go to a 1-2-2 trap. That was the absolute sign of a young, inexperienced team," Shields said. "What I did say in the locker room, I said, 'We need somebody to make an executive decision out there. We're down two, they have the ball, somebody out there just take command and go to a trap situation.' We've got three or four traps in our repertoire. I said, 'But we learned. It happened this time. It will not happen a second time.'"

Stay true and keep pounding,
Christopher
