Thursday Grab Bag: All Academic Teams

We're down to the last week of the NBA, but before we get to the dog days of summer, we've still got two more basketball games to enjoy (Lakers in 5).

And in other news, I ate a superb sirloin filet last night for dinner after a long day and it was delicious. Speaking of food, if you have a grill and like to barbeque, you need to check out ESPN's Bill Simmons' podcast with grillmaster Adam Perry Lang. Great tips.

For those that believe the focus on athletics detracts from education, check out the All-Academic teams from the spring sports. Those familiar will notice most every star in all the sports did damage in the classroom as well.

Two New Mexico stars: Congratulations to Albuquerque Academy's Max Walla for getting drafted Tuesday by the Milwaukee Brewers in the second round, No. 73 overall.

Walla and Academy knocked out Farmington before beating Piedra Vista in this year's 4A state baseball championship.

Finding out the news on two laptops at his home, Walla's teammates dogpiled him.

Academy's Curtis Beach may have one-upped Walla. The man that prevented Aztec's Jake Espinoza from winning a couple state titles at the 4A track meet broke the national high school record in the decathlon using international implements at the Great Southwest Classic. He already had the record using high school implements.

DyeStat, the most respected and comprehensive high school track & field niche site, named Beach "the greatest U.S. high school decathlete ever."

Beach won eight of the 10 events, finishing second in the discus and sixth in the javelin.

Johnny Strange: A 17-year-old from Malibu, Calif., became the youngest person in history to summit the highest mountains on all seven continents this week.

His name? Yes, it's serious: Johnny Strange.

He summited Mount Everest with his father before climbing Australia's 7,310-foot Mt. Kosciuszko days later to complete his feat Tuesday.

Strange summited Antarctica's Mt. Vinson when he was 12 and that made him want to go after Everest.

Remarkable feat, both from a financial and physical standpoint. The Everest conquest alone cost the Strange family $150,000, the cost for a guided trek for two plus six extra Sherpa porters to haul emergency oxygen, an expensive and lavish safeguard.

Bust or Boom: Great post by the Washington Post's Dan Steinberg on the D.C. Sports Blog regarding the district's No. 1 historical draft picks. The Nationals picked Stephen Strasburg first in the MLB Draft on Tuesday.

He compared Capitals icon Alex Ovechkin with Wizards flameout Kwame Brown.

Brown's draft night quote: "I could be a bust....I'm in no better position than the guy who gets picked 20th tonight. There is pressure on me now because of being chosen first."

Ovechkin's: "If you are second, you are second. If you are first, you are first. I always want to be first."

Strasburg fell somewhere in between: "If you want something bad enough, you've got to go out and get it."

Roughnecks: The 4 Corners Roughnecks face the New Mexico Titans at noon on Sunday in the first round of the Southwest Football Conference playoffs.

The Roughnecks lost 17-0 to the Titans on May 31. The winner will play the New Mexico Crush for the SWFC title.
