Monday Morning Tidbits: McGaha and More

Piedra Vista named former Farmington assistant Mike McGaha head coach last week, prompting a slew of opinions on the Daily Times discussion forum -- most of them strong and many of them compelling.

To get my take, check out my column on why McGaha isn't a traitor for switching to the Scorps' crosstown rival.

Here are some of the highlights:

"I think we can now mention McGaha's and benedict arnold's names in the same sentence. Im sure that all the farmington high baseball players feel betrayed and probably need a little help pulling the big knife out of their back's."

-- hmm loyalty

"Let's see. A guy can stay at FHS and maybe become the head guy there in 30 years or he can move across town, take over a program that is loaded with talent and returns what will be the best lineup in the state. That is a no-brainer. ... Best of luck to Coach McGaha and his new endeavor. As a Scorpion fan, I'll cheer for the Panthers each game that they are not playing the Scorps."

-- REALLY

"How simple minded you are to pass judgment on a man for taking a promotion. That is just wrong."

-- PVP

"I'm curious to see who he brings aboard as assistants."

-- Street Slum Slayer

"They are just kids, give them a break. Of course they are going to feel betrayed. ... I think it will really heat up the competition even more!"

-- WEML

"Are you kidding me? This is just a game. It's just a game, it's just a game. This is proof that this town is ridiculously far too invested in it's sport reputation. Absurd."

-- mee

"as a kid and a player, i'll tell you what is really absurd is when i see a group of adults get on here and bash another adult for a decision he makes. i'm 18 years old and i think that i seem to have a better understanding than most of the people on here do. coaching is just like any other job out there in that you don't just start out at the top. assistants coaches are assistant coaches because they are trying to build a rep to get a head coaching job, whether it be where they already are or somewhere else. yes in coach mcgaha's case he left to go to fhs's crosstown rivals. WHO CARES!!!! he was an assistant because he wanted to be a head coach down the road and the opportunity came along, why would he pass it up? he'd be crazy if he did. You have to earn your way to the top as a coach and i wish coach mcgaha and his staff the best of luck, he's taking over a great program. GO PANTHERS!!!"

A few other notes:

* In case you missed it, my two-part series investigating the safety commitment and number of horses euthanized at SunRay Park can be found here and here.

The result was mostly positive. There are lots of safeguards in place to assure safety, the SunRay management really cares about it and has spent a heap of money this year to improve it and the results have been close to spectacular during this race meet.

Last year the numbers weren't so great. Fifteen horses were euthanized at SunRay Park in 3,285 starts, or 4.57 per 1,000 -- a number that's been cut to less than a third this year.

* Sports editor Darren Vaughan wrote a column about former Connie Mack World Series participants now competing in the College World Series.

He missed one, writes Cheryle Millikin.

"I really got excited when I saw the front page of the sports section this morning on your article on Ex-CMWS stars reaching the bigger stage. But when I read finished reading it, I was a little disappointed.  Here one of the teams LSU that has made it to the BIG games, you only mentioned Anthony Ranaudo.  There is another player that plays for them that was here in 2006. First baseman Sean Ochinko played for the Midland Redskins, and he was their catcher.  Sean also got drafted in the 11th round by the Toronto Blue Jays. I can understand that you can't mention all of them....but this is one who is currently playing and that we will be eagerly watching the next couple of days on the big screen.

"This comes from the family that was his host family when he played here in 2006, so I guess we are slightly prejudice about it!"
