it's always nice to be able to shoot a variety of assignments. that's one of the big reasons i love what i do. the subject matter of what i photograph varies much from day-to-day, for the most part. i was once told a good news photo will convey a part of the story that can't always come across in words, while adding to and supporting the reporter's story and being aesthetically pleasing -- all captured in a 'decisive' moment. we may not always be able to accomplish all of those things in one photo, but again, it's a good goal to have while taking photos.
below are a few recent photos i hoped did the job described above (or were at least fun photos to see), which ran within the last month, for the most part.

-here's one to kick it off. i was traveling through Kirtland looking
for an old billboard for our story on Saturday by Liz Piazza on the
launch of the new anti-meth campaign, and came across this accident
involving an officer with the NM State Police. amazingly, no one was
seriously hurt -- despite the mangled appearance of this officer's car.
a welcome change from accident's where there are injuries.
Xavier Mascareñas/The Daily Times

New Mexico State Police Officer Jeremy Yazzie walks past his patrol car Friday on U.S. 64 on the west end of Kirtland. He had pulled over with his police lights on to help a motorist in the right-hand lane of eastbound U.S. 64, according to N.M. State Police Officer Gary Chavez, when a semitrailer hit his car from the rear. No one was seriously injured, but the car was totaled and traffic was slow in the eastbound lane entering Kirtland.

Pat Hogan, our online editor, has launched a new blog for us Daily
Times photo folks to show some of our work. The blog will be a great
place to share some of the photos we run, but also to get out some of
the photos that don't make it to the daily print edition.
Enjoy, and I hope you check back frequently,
Xavier Mascareñas
