it's always nice to be able to shoot a variety of assignments. that's one of the big reasons i love what i do. the subject matter of what i photograph varies much from day-to-day, for the most part. i was once told a good news photo will convey a part of the story that can't always come across in words, while adding to and supporting the reporter's story and being aesthetically pleasing -- all captured in a 'decisive' moment. we may not always be able to accomplish all of those things in one photo, but again, it's a good goal to have while taking photos.
below are a few recent photos i hoped did the job described above (or were at least fun photos to see), which ran within the last month, for the most part.

Xavier Mascareñas/The Daily Times; Bryan Begaye feeds his 8-month-old son, Kyree, who cries for his bottle, while attending the eighth annual young parent conference with Kyree's mother, Monyca Nelson, on Wednesday at San Juan College.

I liked the "kicker" (photo headline) on the next photo, it worked with the photo well, i thought. good job copy/designers. it read :

"Altrusitic Warfare"

Xavier Mascareñas/The Daily Times; Sacred Heart Catholic School students and a teacher frantically stuff pennies in a glass jar Friday as a part of the "Penny Wars" fundraiser. Xavier Mascareñas/The Daily Times; Harold Lampton, 89 years old, looks at a 1900 U.S. Census book Friday detailing New Mexico's population at the turn of the last century. The book once belonged to his father, who referred to it before moving to New Mexico.

Xavier Mascareñas/The Daily Times; A paramedic, far left, attempts to move an injured man from his vehicle, which hit a power pole, onto a stretcher while a Farmington firefighter keeps an eye on the power lines above the scene of a two-car accident Sunday that caused power outages downtown. The wreck at the intersection of Lake Street and Broadway occurred when the man drove through a red light and was hit by a man driving with his children, who were not seriously injured, according to Farmington Police Cpl. Donnie Kee. The man driving alone, not identified by police at the time of the accident, was conscious when he was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center with injury to his head.

this is culled down from a lot (well over 70 at one point -- i need a photo editor!), and even though i left some out that may have had some good impact, also, i think these best represented the year's work for me. thanks for looking, and enjoy! and Happy New Year to everyone.

below is a slideshow, without audio, made in a program called Soundslides, which has become pretty popular in the online newspaper world, due to it's ease of use (you can create full-on multimedia presentations with photos synced to music or audio from a story, or you can use it to make a simple photo-slideshow, like below).
it's easy to use -- just press the play button on the bottom-left and kick back, or you can have full control by using the arrow buttons on the bottom-right of the box. captions are also selectable below.

these guys are unsung heroes, of a sort. they fix power poles when people run into them; they replace power lines when a tree or extreme weather bring them down; and they do it under pressure since people's power is out while they are doing their work (mostly).
here's a couple photos showing their job in Farmington today. i was a bit worried for them when they were trying to position the replacement pole -- it looked like playing pick-up sticks (anyone?) using a sewing needle, with wooden mittens on. i would have like to have seen the end, when they were going to transfer the power lines and conductors to the replacement pole, but i had to leave.

this was a good game and, actually, the Bulldogs played a little more aggressive than the Panthers. in the end, though, the Panthers decision-making an ability to play as a team -- something Albuquerque seemed to be missing (even though they had some talented players, no one was there to step up when they were neutralized on the field).
most of the game-action photos ran in the paper, but i'll lead the post with some non-game stuff that didn't run.
enjoy...
