'Oklahoma!' is coming

I just got back from watching a rehearsal of Sandstone Production's rehearsal of "Oklahoma!" for an article I'm writing for the newspaper. After watching the rehearsal, I have to say I'm really excited. This is going to be a great production of one of the best musicals of all time and the cast and crew seem really committed

While I was there, I recorded some video of the cast rehearsing the song "I Cain't Say No." Keep in mind, this was recorded outside on my cell phone, so the audio quality's not great. Hopefully this whets your appetite for more. Oklahoma opens next Thursday.

Working for the weekend

What are your plans for this weekend? If you don't have any yet, you might want to look into the following options.

  • Ducks For Buck fundraiser at Wines of the San Juan. San Juan County's very own winery is one of my favorite spots in the area, and this weekend they'll be raising money to help out kids with Niemann-Pick Disease.
  • A new art gallery is opening in Aztec. Norene Klemm and her husband James Joe are very committed to providing a new artistic space in Aztec, and I wish them the best of luck.
  • The Bonnie Dallas Senior Center is having an outdoor flea market tomorrow morning. Should be a good chance to get some good deals.
  • XTERRA returns to the Four Corners. XTERRA is a unique kind of triathlon that involves swimming, running and biking. This is only the second year Farmington's had XTERRA, but already it is ranked #5 in the nation.
Are you doing any of these things this weekend? Something else? Why not let us know in the comments.

TGIF at Orchard Park

Did you get down to Orchard Park yesterday? I went there and got some video of the band performing. Here's San Juan College Company with their rendition of "Come Sail Away."

See you there next Friday.

Important note on art walk

The date in the article that ran in today's Daily Times for the Summer Art Walk is wrong. The art walk is on Friday, June 11. We'll be running a correction in Sunday's paper. I'm really sorry for this folks, this was my mistake, and I'll do whatever I can to make up for it.

It's Friday, which is a momentous occasion in its own right, but more importantly, it's the first day of the downtown TGIF celebration in Orchard Park. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be music and food down there to celebrate the arrival of the weekend.

I'm planning on going down today with my camera to get some video for the blog, so if you see me, be sure to say "Hi." See you there!

Did you get your copy of Explore in The Daily Times today? Don't worry if you didn't, all the articles are right here on Daily-Times.com.

This is a busy weekend in the county, with Farmington's Riverfest getting most of the attention. But there are some other interesting events happening this weekend including:

  • The start of TGIF in Orchard Park. Going to be some great food and great music, and I know we're all excited here at The Daily Times seeing as how it's only a block away from our office.
  • The 49 Laughs comedy show featuring James and Ernie at the Farmington Civic Center. I've never had the chance to see James and Ernie, but multiple people have told me they are side-splittingly awesome.
  • The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic in Durango. This is one of my favorite events of the year in Durango. I like to go up just to see the bikes as they come in to downtown.
There's also the usual reviews and a particularely dated column from me about avoiding Lost spoilers. I wrote the column on Tuesday and since then, I have seen the final episode. Long story short, I hated it.

Apron mania sweeps Farmington

This evening, I had the opportunity to meet EllynAnne Geisel at the Farmington Public Library. EllynAnne is known far and wide for her work collecting and interpreting aprons , and she's not alone. Quite a few people came out to see her tonight at the Library, and they brought their aprons with them. One of the women who had a rather extensive collection, Terry McCloskey, was kind enough to go over her collection with me, so I took out my Flip video camera to record it.

Thanks Terry! If you missed EllynAnne's presentation, she'll be at a reception at Artifacts Gallery in downtown Farmington Saturday starting at 2 p.m.

Plein-air painters

Sorry for the few days absence. I recently moved to a new desk, and doing so had the unintended effect of unearthing all sorts of bits and pieces I needed to catch up on.

In the meantime, here's a video I shot last weekend of Cindy McNealy, the director of the Henderson Fine Arts Center Gallery at San Juan College, explaining the gallery's newest exhibit on Plein-Air Painters. The exhibit is going to remain up for the rest of the month, so be sure to head down and check it out.
